Chessington World of Adventures Resort have today received the go ahead for their proposed new High Ropes course.
Set to be located next to the Sixty Acre Wood, the plans show that two High Ropes courses will be constructed – a “junior course” aimed at younger guests (under 10) and those not quite so confident which would take approximately one hour to complete and have a capacity of up to 330 guests per day, and a larger “adult course” for those of a higher ability level or who have a greater level of confidence which would take approximately three hours to complete and have a capacity of up to 420 guests per day. Both courses will begin from the same, central 16 metre tall start tower, and end in the same place with a 150 metre long zip wire finale, however each course will take its own unique path through the woodland. A range of obstacles will enable guests to move between a series of raised platforms as they make their way around their chosen course. A reception building will also be constructed beneath the final zip wire, adjacent to a dedicated, grassed parking area, which will house a check in area, toilets, café, storage and an education centre, which will be used solely by those guests visiting for the High Ropes Course. A series of paths through the woodland will be installed to help improve access to the general area. Due to the location of the attraction within the resort, a shuttle service is also proposed to transport guests from the hotel and main resort area to the High Ropes course.
As is usual with this type of development, permission has been granted subject to a number of conditions designed to ensure the new addition is appropriate for the area in which it is located. These include not installing any external lighting without prior written approval to prevent light pollution; not starting construction of the reception building until a written ‘scheme of investigation’ has been submitted and approved; ensuring the car parking provision is in place before the attraction opens and is only used by High Ropes visitors; and, should the attraction no longer be used, all structures will be removed and the land restored to its former state as far as is possible.
The new High Ropes attraction will be operated by Chessington World of Adventures Resort in conjunction with Go Ape Ltd and it is proposed that tickets for the facility would be available either in conjunction with theme park entrance, or purchased separately. Courses would operate during daylight hours, with the first slots available at 8am each day and the final admission for the adult course being at 6pm (to complete the course by 9pm), and the final admission for the junior course being at 7pm (to complete the course by 8pm), however the final admittance would become earlier as daylight hours become shorter. Although the original plans submitted stated that the Resort were aiming to open the attraction in February 2016, it is not currently known exactly when the new course will be open for guests to enjoy.
This latest addition to the Resort is a continuation of a series of investments in the wider Resort offering at Chessington World of Adventures and forms part of a wider strategy to drive more muti-day visitors to the Resort. It will follow on from the installation of the Enchanted Forest Tree Top Quest at Alton Towers Resort, which saw a High and Low Ropes course open in May last year.
